Cabinet Painting in Bronx, NY

Bronx kitchens are often compact galley kitchens, where the cabinets are most of what you see. Painting them changes the room for far less than replacing them. We take doors and drawer fronts off, remove grease, sand, prime with a bonding primer and finish with an enamel made for cabinets.

A typical Bronx kitchen is small. In pre-war apartments it is often a narrow galley with one window or none, and in two family houses it sits at the back of each floor. Cabinets fill most of the wall space, so their finish sets the look of the room. If the boxes are solid and the doors hang straight, paint is a sound choice. We look at hinges, drawer slides and any water swelling under the sink before we recommend painting.

Cooking grease is the enemy of cabinet paint, and a kitchen with a weak exhaust fan collects a lot of it. We remove doors and drawer fronts, label each one, and scrub every surface with a degreaser. Then we sand to dull the old finish, fill dents, and apply a bonding primer. The finish is a cabinet grade enamel in two coats, sanded lightly between them. Frames are painted in place with the counters, floor and appliances fully covered.

Plan on the kitchen being partly out of use for several days. You can still reach the sink and the refrigerator, but the cabinets stay open and empty while the frames dry. The enamel feels dry within a day and keeps hardening for a few weeks, so we ask you to close doors gently and skip harsh cleaners at first. In a co-op or condo we follow the house rules on work hours and on carrying doors through the lobby.

Cabinet painting in Bronx: common questions

Where do you paint the doors if my apartment has no spare room?

House painters Bronx

We set up a drying area in the largest room, on racks over floor protection, or take the doors away to finish them and bring them back. Which one we use depends on your space and your building's rules.

Can laminate or thermofoil cabinets be painted?

Sound laminate can be painted with the right bonding primer. Thermofoil that is peeling at the edges is a poor base, because the paint is only as good as the skin under it. We check each door and tell you.

Will brush marks show?

A cabinet enamel levels as it dries, which removes most marks. Flat door panels come out smoothest when they are finished lying down. Ask us at the estimate how your doors will be coated.
