Riverdale has two kinds of painting work. The first is inside the large co-op and condo buildings along the Henry Hudson Parkway and in Spuyten Duyvil. Most went up in the middle of the 1900s, and repainting there means working to the building's rules: a certificate of insurance, set hours and protected hallways and elevators. The second is the detached houses of Fieldston and the streets near the Hudson. Many are stone, brick, stucco and half-timbered Tudors with wood windows, wood trim and cedar shingles. Tall trees keep these houses shaded, so paint on the north side stays damp longer and grows mildew. Winter freeze and thaw opens up joints in old wood trim.
