Decks in the Bronx are mostly behind the detached houses of Throgs Neck, City Island, Pelham Bay, Woodlawn and Riverdale. Sun, snow and, near the shore, salt wear a deck finish faster than any wall. We wash the wood, let it dry fully, replace bad boards and apply stain or paint in thin coats that soak in.
The Bronx has fewer decks than the suburbs, and they are grouped where the houses have yards: Throgs Neck, Country Club, City Island, Pelham Bay, Woodlawn and the hills of Riverdale. Many are raised decks off a kitchen door, built of pressure treated pine, with stairs down to a small yard. We also coat wood front porches, porch steps and roof decks on rowhouses, which are flat, fully exposed and the hardest on any finish.
Flat boards hold snow in winter and standing water after a summer storm, and that is why deck coatings wear out sooner than wall paint. Trees over a yard add shade, leaves and green growth. We clean the wood with a deck cleaner and a gentle rinse, let it dry for days, set popped fasteners, replace rotted boards and sand rough spots. Stain is brushed into the grain in thin coats. Thick coats sit on top and peel.
We will ask what is on the deck now. A deck that was painted has to be painted again or fully stripped. A stained deck can be cleaned and stained again. Near the water in City Island and Throgs Neck, salt and wind shorten the time between coats, so we suggest a penetrating stain that is easy to renew. Plan to keep furniture, planters and foot traffic off the boards until we tell you the finish has cured.

Deck painting & staining in Bronx: common questions
How do I know if my deck needs a new coat?

Sprinkle water on a board. If it soaks in and darkens the wood within a few minutes, the old finish is no longer shedding water and it is time. Gray, fuzzy wood means the same thing.
Can you stain a new pressure treated deck right away?
No. New treated lumber is wet from the plant and has to dry before stain will soak in. How long depends on the wood and the weather. We test the boards with a moisture meter.
Do you coat the railings and stairs too?
Yes. Railings, balusters, stair treads and the visible framing are part of a normal deck job. The quote lists each part so you can see what is included.
