Pelham Bay is a neighbourhood of brick. One and two family brick houses, attached row houses and low apartment buildings fill the blocks between Westchester Avenue and Pelham Bay Park. Brick itself is rarely painted here. The painting work outside is the parts around it: wood and metal trim, cornices, window frames, doors, iron railings, awnings, porches and garage doors. Some houses have vinyl or aluminum siding on a rear extension or an upper floor. Inside, older houses have plaster walls and newer ones drywall. Cold winters, wet springs and humid summers are hard on painted metal and wood at ground level. Railings rust where the paint chips, and wood door frames soften at the bottom.
