Woodlawn, also called Woodlawn Heights, sits at the top of the Bronx between Van Cortlandt Park and Woodlawn Cemetery. It is a neighbourhood of houses, not towers. Most are detached or semi-detached one and two family homes from the early 1900s, with wood frames, porches, dormers and steep roofs. Many now wear vinyl or aluminum siding, but the trim, porch columns, railings and windows are often still painted wood. Small apartment buildings and shops run along Katonah Avenue. Outside, the work is mostly trim, porches and faded siding. Shade from big street trees and the parks keeps some walls damp, so mildew has to be washed off before painting.
