Painting Questions: DIY, Problems After the Job and Estimates

These are the questions that do not fit on our other guide pages: doing it yourself, and what to do when a paint job goes wrong.

Price ranges on this page are national figures published by HomeGuide for 2026. They are not our quotes. New York City labor, building rules, access and the state of your own walls move the number up or down. Last checked October 2026.

Should I paint myself or hire a painter?

Paint it yourself if the job is small, the walls are in good shape and you have the time. Hire a painter when there is real prep, height, old paint or a deadline.

One bedroom with sound walls is a fair weekend project. A whole pre-war apartment with cracked plaster, ten foot ceilings and old trim is a different size of job.

How much would I save painting myself?

You save the labor, which is 70% to 85% of an interior job by the national figures. You still pay for paint, primer and tools.

Put a value on your own time too. A room a painter finishes in a day can take a first timer a weekend or two.

Is a two-story exterior too dangerous to DIY?

For most people, yes. Work from a tall ladder is the most dangerous part of painting. Falls from ladders cause serious injuries every year.

Bronx houses add narrow alleys, sloped driveways and sidewalks with people walking under you. Ground floor trim and doors are reasonable to do yourself. Leave upper floors and cornices to a crew with the right equipment and insurance.

Is renting a sprayer worth it?

Not for most home jobs. A sprayer is fast on big empty spaces, but masking takes longer than the spraying and there is a learning curve.

In a furnished apartment or on a house close to its neighbors, overspray is a real risk. A roller and a good brush do better work for most people.

My DIY paint job looks bad. Can a pro fix it?

Yes. A painter can fix a bad paint job. Drips and ridges are sanded down, rough cut lines are redone and the walls are recoated.

It costs more if the paint did not bond, because that layer has to come off first.

When is a job too big to do myself?

A job is too big when it needs skills or equipment you do not have. Common signs are below.

  • Ceilings or walls you cannot reach from a short step ladder.
  • Plaster repair or skim coating.
  • Peeling paint in a building from before 1978.
  • Cabinets, which need a hard, smooth finish.
  • Any deadline, such as a move in date or a lease start.

Why is new paint peeling after a few months?

New paint that peels within a few months did not bond. The cause is under the paint: moisture, grease, dust, glossy old paint or a weak old layer such as calcimine on a ceiling.

Look at the back of a peeled chip. If old paint came off with it, the old layer failed. If the back is clean, the new paint never gripped. Either way the loose paint has to be removed and the surface primed properly.

Why does new paint look streaky or show roller marks, and why can I still see the old color?

Paint looks streaky and shows roller marks when it was spread too thin, worked after it began to dry or put on with a poor roller.

One coat over a different color also looks streaky. A proper second coat, applied wet edge to wet edge, usually fixes it.

You can still see the old color because the new paint has not built enough film to hide it. It needs another coat, or it needed primer first.

Reds, yellows and bright whites hide poorly. Strong old colors under them should be primed.

Why does the wall look splotchy in side light?

A wall looks splotchy or uneven in side light when its surface is not uniform. Patches that were not primed, heavy and thin roller areas and old repairs all reflect light differently.

Light from a window at the end of a long wall shows everything. Priming patches and painting whole walls in a low sheen cure most of it. Very uneven plaster may need a skim coat.

Why do touch-ups not match?

Touch-ups do not match because the paint on the wall has aged and the new dab has a different thickness and texture. Even paint from the same can may show.

Touch-ups blend best in flat paint, soon after the job, using the same tool as the first time. For eggshell and shinier paints, repaint the whole wall from corner to corner.

Why did paint peel off with the painter's tape?

Paint comes off with the tape when the paint under the tape was not well bonded, or when the tape was left on too long.

Pull tape slowly at a low angle while the paint is fresh, or score the edge with a knife first. If old paint lifts with it, the wall had an adhesion problem before the tape went on.

Should a painter come back to fix missed spots?

Yes. A painter should come back for missed spots, thin areas and drips. Do a walk-through together before final payment and mark anything you see.

We do a final walk-through on every job for that reason.

The painter left paint on floors and windows. What now?

Ask the painter to clean it, in writing, with photos. Fresh water based drips on floors, tile and glass usually come off with care.

Do not scrape glass or a wood floor hard yourself, because scratches are worse than paint. If something is truly damaged, the painter's insurance should cover it.

The painter will not come back. What are my options?

If the painter will not come back, write to them with a list of what is unfinished, photos and a date by which you expect an answer. Keep copies.

If that fails, New York City residents can file a complaint with the Department of Consumer and Worker Protection online or through 311. Small claims court is another route. A lawyer can tell you what applies to your case.

The final invoice is higher than the written estimate. What now?

Ask for a written breakdown of the difference. An invoice higher than the estimate should match extra work that you approved.

If nobody asked you before doing extra work, say so in writing and refer to the signed contract. This is why the contract should state how changes are approved.

Who pays to fix paint that failed early?

Who pays depends on the cause. If the prep or application was at fault, the painter should fix it. If the paint itself was defective, the maker's warranty covers the product.

If a leak, damp wall or steam caused it, the repair is the owner's or the building's. A painter should be able to show you which it is.
